How to Choose a High Chair

Pick a high chair that fits your kitchen, cleanup routine, and how long you want it to last.

A high chair is one of those purchases you use multiple times a day for years. The right one keeps mealtime calmer; the wrong one becomes a bulky obstacle in a small kitchen.

Start with your kitchen layout

Measure the footprint where the chair will live when baby is eating and when it is stored. Check:

  • Distance from table or island
  • Floor type (rugs vs. hard floors for stability)
  • Whether you need a fold-flat option between meals

Safety checklist

  • Five-point harness for younger babies
  • Wide, stable base that does not tip easily
  • Locking wheels if the chair moves
  • JPMA or ASTM compliance listed in specs

Cleanup matters more than you think

Look for removable, dishwasher-safe trays and wipeable seat pads. Crevices collect purée — if you cannot reach it with a cloth, you will regret it within a week.

Our recommendation

Buy for the longest stage you can afford in your space. A chair that grows with your child costs more upfront but often beats replacing a infant-only model at 18 months.
